Preparing a skin scrape

With the edge of a blunt plastic card or the slide to be used, gently scrape along the side of the koi from just behind the gill plate in the direction of the scales, or a site around an ulcer or blood-shot areas are good locations for parasites.

With the mucus in the centre of the slide lower a cover slip onto the mucus and firm down to spread the mucus and make into a thin layer, now dry the slide being careful not to disturb the cover slip and mucus.

The specimin is now ready to place on the stage of the microscope.

Using 100x magnification start in one corner of the cover slip and move the slide back and forward whilst either moving up or down in order to view the whole area of the cover slip.

Now you are up and running with your microscope, dont be alarmed if you see the odd trichodina or body fluke they are always there in small numbers and will only be a problem should anything happen to cause them to muliply, one or two on the slide is quite acceptable.

The other parasites you are likely to come accross are white spot, gill fluke, and childonella and all of these should be treated for, even if only one is found due to the damage they will cause and kill your koi.

Wedmore SP series Microscopes

brunel microscopeThe Wedmore SP Series Microscopes are a range of high quality, high performance instruments. The robust design of these instruments is particularly suited to the rigours of education establishments and the dedicated amature naturalist. The excellent optical performance is exeptional for a microscope in this price range.

The Wedmore range is designed to give a modular approach to microscopy, offering a number of specifications which can be matched to budgets and optical requirements.

Irrespective of the model, all Wedmore SP microscopes are equiped with a full substage Abbe condenser (N.A. 1.2), with iris diaphragm, filter carrier and full rack and pinion adjustment. The full size Microscope stands are of stable die-cast construction, finished in grey enamel and may be inclined for convienient operation.

The excellent value of the Wedgemore range allows the purchase of a full size professional microscope, incorporating RMS standard thread achromatic objectives, with full substage condenser, for a little more than many of the sub standard microscopes that are widely available.

The basic unit incorporates a quadruple objective turret, seperate coarse and fine focus controls and a square specimin stage with side clips, which can also accomodate a mechanical specimin driver. Illumination is by mirror and gimbal which may be replaced by a substage 240v, 12-watt lamp unit which provides optimum illumination at all magnifications.

The wide range of accessories includes: measuring equipment, photography and drawing attachments, together with a list which enables the basic unit (SP01) to be fully upgraded to the SP14 on a peicemeal basis.

Alternativly, the Wedmore series of microscopes can be purchased with a complete specification at several levels. The additional items available with the specification of each successive model are highlighted in Bold. Remember, all models have coarse and fine focus and fully adjustable Abbe condenser with iris diaphragm as standard, and may be fitted with a safety stop.
